Beside the provincial of Bozen, the second largest town in South Tyrol is Meran.  For centuries it had been the Tyrolean capital.  Meran is located in the midst of a wide valley basin, surrounded by mountains (1,500 – 3,335 metres) at the valley entrance of the Passeier Valley, the Vinschgau and the Ulten Valley.
The town’s spa facility is known since the 19th Century and is divided into districts.  These are Gratsch, Obermais, Untermais, Labers, Sinich and the actual town of Meran, also known as ‘Altstadt‘, i.e. historic city centre.

Meran spa facility ‘Therme Meran‘ – a landscape of 7,650 m²
Beside numerous offers of massages and well-being packages, there are 25 pools available in the indoors and outdoors areas, as well as a 1,250m² large sauna landscape.  The ‘Therme Meran‘ is embedded into the beautiful South Tyrolean landscape and comes with a 5.1 hectare park, including its variety of Mediterranean plants, century-old cedar trees and ancient trees.
The indoor design was laid out by Milan star architect Matteo Thun who was only a short while ago introduced to the Hall of Fame in New York.

The gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff
On a sunny slope just above Meran in Obermais, you will come across the blooming and fragrant gardens of Castle Trauttmansdorff.  On 12 hectare of castle grounds, you will find about 100,000 different plants of which 3,000 types are being presented in four garden landscapes (sun gardens, water and terrace gardens, forest gardens and South Tyrolean landscapes).  Some highlights are the grotto with its multi-media show about the development of plants, the geological mosaic presenting the world of rocks in Tyrol’s history, the orchid house and the Japanese garden.
